Beware: Dangerous Spider in Ukraine

During the summer months, particularly in the Odessa region, the risk of encountering the dangerous karakurt spider increases.

From late July to September marks the peak activity period for these hazardous arachnids, warns the local disease control center.

The greatest threat to humans is posed by the adult female karakurt, with its intensely black, velvety body reaching up to 2 cm in diameter. Males are smaller with bright red spots outlined in white. Male bites are usually harmless as they cannot penetrate human skin.

"If bitten by a karakurt, it is crucial to seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms can escalate quickly: general weakness, abdominal pain, fever, sweating, cramps, and urinary retention. This can be life-threatening," warns the entomologist.

What to do in case of a bite

"The venom of the karakurt is destroyed by high temperatures. Applying a lit match to the bite site within the first few minutes may alleviate the victim's condition. Therefore, it's advisable to carry matches while outdoors or gardening," advises the expert.

It is recommended to work in gardens wearing thick gloves and closed footwear; do not leave shoes outside, especially in shaded areas; regularly check for cocoons and burn them along with dry vegetation.

"The karakurt is indeed a very dangerous creature. Simple adherence to safety measures can help prevent serious consequences. Stay cautious!", emphasizes the entomologist.
