Honoring Heroes: A New Memorial for Ukraine's Defenders
The event was attended by Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi, Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction Oleksii Kuleba, Minister of Defense Denys Shmyhal, Minister for Veterans Affairs Natalia Kalmykova, and Deputy Head of the President's Office Pavlo Palisa.
The President listened to the report from the spokesperson of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, Hennadii Popenko. The cemetery has already been equipped with sectors for honorary burials, two columbaria have been erected, and engineering networks and access roads have been laid. A parking lot and a shuttle service for visitors have also been provided. The President arrived today using this shuttle.
A separate area has been allocated for the burial of soldiers whose names are currently unknown. An Alley of Limes is also being created as a symbolic path of remembrance.
The uniqueness of the memorial lies in standardized burials. Initially, a temporary cross will be installed based on Cossack monuments from the 15th-16th centuries, and after a year, a permanent headstone in the form of a cross or plaque will be placed. The final option will be chosen by the relatives of the deceased.
Today, five defenders whose names are not yet known were buried. The cemetery will continue to host burials for unknown heroes.
A moment of silence was held to honor the memory of the fallen soldiers.
