SpaceX Shuts Down Fraudulent Networks in Myanmar
SpaceX has taken significant action by disabling more than 2500 Starlink devices in Myanmar that were utilized for illegal online activities. This decision comes amid rising concerns from the United States regarding the use of Starlink by criminal organizations.
Lauren Dreyer, the Vice President of Starlink Business Operations at SpaceX, stated that the company is actively monitoring all markets where Starlink operates.
«When violations occur, we take the appropriate measures, including collaborating with law enforcement agencies,» she noted.
Dreyer added that SpaceX independently identified and «blocked numerous Starlink kits associated with fraudulent activities».
While the exact date of the disconnections remains undisclosed, the announcement followed reports of military raids in Myanmar that uncovered several Starlink kits at fraudulent sites.
Recent reports from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute indicate that around 30 large-scale fraud complexes operate near the Myanmar-Thailand border, causing billions of dollars in annual losses, including to American citizens.
Workers in such centers are often lured with promises of well-paying jobs, with many falling victim to human trafficking. They are regularly held against their will and forced to participate in online scams where violence is commonplace, according to CNN.
