Car Theft in Podil: Suspect Arrested

Police have apprehended a resident of the Podil district for stealing a car. The thief committed the act because he did not want to walk home. He has been charged and a preventive measure has been imposed. He faces imprisonment along with property confiscation.

Law enforcement officials reported that the incident took place in a village within the Zelenogirska community. The police received a report from a local resident about an unknown person stealing his VAZ car from the yard during the night.

"The vehicle was discovered by police on the outskirts of the village, near the crime scene. During initial investigative actions that same day, the suspect was quickly identified and apprehended at his residence. He turned out to be a 26-year-old man from the Balta community, previously convicted for property crimes," the statement said.

The suspect explained that upon seeing an unguarded car in someone else's yard, he decided to drive it home. The vehicle was unlocked, and he managed to start the engine by connecting the ignition wires. However, he couldn't get far as the vehicle broke down, and leaving it on the outskirts of the village, he fled the scene.

"We detained the suspect in accordance with procedural law. We have gathered enough evidence to inform him of charges for committing a crime under part 2 of Article 289 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This pertains to illegal possession of a vehicle committed repeatedly. The punishment for this crime can be up to eight years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. The court has chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention. We have also appointed an expert examination to determine the car's value and the amount of damages caused to the victim," said Oleg Sytnyk, head of Police Department No. 1 of Podil RUP.
