Celebrating 160 Years: Donation Drive at University
In honor of the 160th anniversary of Odessa National University named after I. I. Mechnikov, the administration, labor union, student council, and the Department of Physiology, Health, and Human Safety are organizing a event titled «Become a Donor! Save a Life!».
This initiative is part of the university project «HEALTH, MOVEMENT, EDUCATION — the university is alive and active»!
«The primary goal of the campaign is to gather 160 donors to commemorate our university's 160th anniversary, bringing together the university community to save the lives of military personnel and those in need of assistance», — shared the event's organizer, Associate Professor of Physiology, Health, and Human Safety and Natural Education, Vadym Penov.
The blood donation will take place on the university campus with the participation of medical staff from the Odessa Regional Blood Transfusion Station.
The drive kicked off at the branch of ONU on Shampanskoho Lane and will continue next week in the library and other university buildings.
Students, faculty, and staff eagerly participated in blood donation. Within the first two days, over 70 people donated blood. Each participant received a motivational gift from the «Donor Odessa» project — a sticker featuring Sonya the cat, the project’s mascot promoting donation in Odessa.
Additionally, the «Donor Odessa» project conducted informative discussions regarding common questions about blood donation with students from the Vocational College and members of the Scientific Council of the Biological Faculty of ONU named after I. I. Mechnikov.
Promotion activities for blood donation at Mechnikov University took place within the framework of the city charitable project «Weeks of Good Deeds».

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the «Donor Odessa» project has been instrumental in recruiting blood donors for the city’s medical facilities. During this period, over 12,000 blood donations have been made. An extensive information campaign to promote donation and inform about current blood needs is conducted with the ongoing support of the Department of Information and Digital Solutions of the Odessa City Council. This is facilitated through the telegram channel «Odessa.Official» and the mobile app MISTO, which can be downloaded via the link.
