Environmental Challenges in Odesa and Mykolaiv Regions
The consequences of military actions and technological incidents present significant risks to the environment in Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, according to the State Ecological Inspection of the Southwestern District.
Experts emphasize that the region is experiencing soil contamination with toxic substances and combustion products, impacting land fertility and environmental safety.
Simultaneously, there is a noticeable negative effect on water resources — the Black Sea, estuaries, and river systems are suffering from infrastructure destruction and repeated strikes on port facilities.
“Air quality is deteriorating due to explosions, fires, and the operation of industrial facilities during shelling. Additionally, natural areas — coastal zones and steppe ecosystems are losing biodiversity and natural balance,” the statement reads. Eco-inspectors continue to conduct instrumental measurements, document pollution incidents, and respond promptly to citizen inquiries. “Monitoring is ongoing, and data is entered into the ‘EcoThreat’ system, which allows for the formation of an accurate picture of environmental risks.
Collaboration with scientific institutions regarding effective methods for soil and water resource remediation is also ongoing,” the eco-inspection emphasizes.
